Scott Joplin, the "King of Ragtime", received much of his notoriety while living in Missouri and traveling the Mid-West in the early 1900s.
An American composer and pianist, Joplin's ragtime compositions were born out of the African-American community.
During his brief career, he wrote over 100 original ragtime pieces, one ragtime ballet, and two operas.
